Major
media, including 60 Minutes and The
Wall Street Journal, have
reported to millions of Americans that the foods being served
at their dinner tables are filled with harmful chemicals.
The very foods they have been encouraged to eat, including
fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains, may not be safe.
Names like EDB, Daminozide (Alar) and Aflatoxin are causing
consumers to seek alternatives to the foods they buy. How
do we, in the foods industry, respond to these increased consumer
demands for clean food?
Westbrae Natural Foods, Inc. has, since its inception, produced
a line of organic, natural food products free of all pesticides.
The grains and beans used
to make our Tortilla chips,Soups, Corn Chips,Beans, Taco and Tostada
Shells, Popcorn, and Cheese Puffs, are all certified organically
grown. At Little Bear, this means that we contract for
crops grown only on land that has been free of chemical fertilizers,
pesticides and herbicides for a minimum of three years. Instead
of chemicals, our farmers employ the techniques of "sustainable
agriculture"- a system of organic farming that works
with the environment.
