This is our assurance to you that our product does not contain ingredients that have been genetically engineered. Although GEO's, genetically engineered organisms, may have been part of our meals for the past 20 years, product labels have not reflected that information. We are now labeling our products which contain ingredients not genetically engineered, GEI-free, so that consumers may make a choice."
For many of you reading this, the words describing the "unknown" part of our m eals is a surprise. The questions quickly raised are 1) what is genetic engineering, and 2) is it bad for me?
We're going to briefly explain GEOs and provide you with sources of information so that you may continue to keep up with the biotech industry and how it affects us. Our primary objective is to label those priducts we make which are GEI-free, not because we know them to be harmful, but because packaging should reflect its contents.
What Are Genetically Engineered Orgnaisms?
Organisms which have been modified by the insertion of DNA by human intention but not by classical breeding methods. This process is part of the new biotechnology, characterized by DNA manipulation and cell culture. According to Mothers for Natural Law, as many as 70% of the items sold at an avrage grocery store may have genetically altered ingredients. The biotech industry is a fast growing business creating such products as tomatoes which stay ripe longer and soybeans immune to pesticides.
Benefits of Genetically Engineered Organisms
Proponents of GEOs promote promised increased yields of crops, reduction inthe use of pesticides and herbicides, better varieties of fruit, vegetables and dairy products, improved appearance of produce, and longer shelf-life, to name a portion of the claims being touted
